Case Details:
Tzangas Plakas Mannos Ltd. attorneys Brandon McHugh and Jeananne Ayoub explain how their team secured justice for a multi-generational Ohio bakery after it was defamed as a racist business by Oberlin College administrators and students.
In November 2016, a Gibson’s Bakery employee confronted three African-American Oberlin College students for attempted shoplifting, which resulted in student protests, flyers encouraging boycotts, and the termination of the college’s business with the bakery. With no evidence of racial discrimination, Oberlin College continued to harm the bakery’s reputation and failed to retract or correct the wrongful statements, leading the jury to conclude that Oberlin College acted with actual malice that warranted punitive damages.
